Portuguese Linen Shirt

Cut from a mid-weight linen woven at a family-run mill in northern Portugal, this shirt has a slightly boxy silhouette, a single chest pocket, and a collar that sits flat without ironing. The fabric softens noticeably after the first three washes. Available in oat, slate, and the original ochre colourway.

Wool Crepe Trousers

A straight-leg trouser in a 100% wool crepe sourced from a Scottish Borders mill. The waistband is elasticated at the back only, which keeps the front flat and the silhouette clean. The fabric has enough weight to hold a crease through a full day's wear without pressing.

Deadstock Cord Overshirt

Made from a deadstock cotton corduroy we sourced from a warehouse in Lyon. The wale is a medium-width 8-wale, which gives the fabric enough texture to read as interesting without being heavy. Unlined, with two chest pockets and a single back vent. Forty pieces total; no restock.

How Velvet Sunflower came to be

Amelia Kearsley opened Velvet Sunflower in March 2019 after eight years as a buyer for a department chain that, by her last year there, was sourcing almost entirely from two large wholesalers. The range had narrowed. The fabrics had thinned. She kept finding things she wanted to stock and being told the margin wasn't there. The boutique started as a corrective to that: a small room with a good rail, stocked with pieces she'd actually wear herself. The first season was twelve labels. Seven of them are still in the shop.

Merino wool: what the micron count actually means

Merino wool is not a single thing. The label '100% merino' tells you the fibre type but nothing about the fineness of the yarn, which is the factor that most determines how the garment feels against your skin. Two merino rollnecks at the same price point can feel completely different, and the micron count is usually why.

How to read a fabric composition label properly

The composition label on a garment is the most honest thing about it. It's a legal requirement, it can't be dressed up in marketing language, and it tells you. If you know how to read it. A fair amount about how the piece will wear, wash, and age. Most people glance at it and move on. It's worth slowing down.

Building an autumn wardrobe without starting from scratch

Every autumn the same thing happens: the temperature drops, you open your wardrobe, and nothing seems right. Some of it is seasonal. You've been wearing linen and cotton for five months and your eye has adjusted. Some of it is real: there are genuine gaps. The trick is telling the difference before you spend anything.

What customers say

I came in for a birthday present and left with a shirt for myself. Amelia pulled three things in my size without me asking and all three fit. That doesn't happen.

— Rosalind T., Regular customer

The wool trousers I bought last autumn have been worn at least twice a week since. The fabric hasn't pilled. I've had cheaper trousers fall apart in a season.

— Margot H., Customer since 2021

Here is where we'd point you

Based on your answers, the core ready-to-wear rail is probably the right place to start. If you'd like a more focused hour, a styling appointment (£35, redeemable) lets us pull pieces in your size before you arrive. Questions we get asked most is also worth a read before your first visit.

Amelia Kearsley

Amelia Kearsley spent eight years as a buyer for a mid-size department chain before leaving in autumn 2018 to open Velvet Sunflower. Before buying, she trained in textile design at Central Saint Martins and spent two years sourcing deadstock fabric for a small London atelier. The decision to open her own boutique came after a sourcing trip to Portugal, where she found a linen mill producing cloth that no British retailer was stocking. She is drawn to natural fibres, muted palettes, and garments that hold their shape after a hundred washes. Outside the shop, she grows dahlias and reads more cookbooks than she cooks from.
